Is God Holding You Back? Discover the Truth About God’s Goodness

Is God restrictive or good? Explore Genesis 3 and discover how God’s boundaries are actually an invitation to freedom and abundant life at Yountville Community Church.

Rethinking How We See God

What if the biggest factor shaping your life isn’t your circumstances—but how you see God?

At Yountville Community Church, we recently explored a powerful truth: “The most important thing about you is how you see God.” That perspective influences everything—your faith, your decisions, and your sense of purpose.

For many, God can feel distant, rule-focused, or even restrictive. Maybe you’ve wondered: Is God holding something back from me? That question isn’t new—it goes all the way back to the beginning.

Genesis 3: A Story Often Misunderstood

In Genesis 3, we find Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. It’s a story many associate with failure, sin, and consequences. But what if we’ve been missing something deeper?

God gave humanity incredible freedom:

  • Dominion over creation

  • Access to the garden

  • Relationship with Him

And only one restriction: don’t eat from a specific tree.

That’s it. One “no” surrounded by countless “yeses.”

Yet the serpent’s question changed everything:
“Did God actually say…?”

That subtle doubt shifted Eve’s perspective—from abundance to restriction. Suddenly, the focus wasn’t on everything God provided, but on the one thing He withheld.

Is God Restrictive—or Protective?

It’s easy to read Genesis 3 and think God is harsh—especially when Adam and Eve are removed from the garden. But look closer.

After their disobedience, God:

  • Covered their shame by clothing them

  • Prevented them from living forever in a broken state

  • Set boundaries for their ultimate good

Even in consequence, God was acting out of compassion.

His warning—“you will die”—was not a threat. It was a loving parent saying, “Don’t touch the stove—it will hurt you.”

The Lie We Still Believe Today

The same question the serpent asked Eve still echoes today:
“Is God really good?”

Many people—inside and outside the church—believe following God means losing freedom. They assume faith is about restriction, sacrifice, and missing out.

But Jesus tells a different story:

“I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10)

God’s heart isn’t to limit you—it’s to lead you into a fuller life.

From Rules to Relationship

One of the biggest misunderstandings about Christianity is that it’s about rules.

But Scripture reveals something different:

  • God’s commands are not about control

  • They are about protection and flourishing

  • They are invitations into relationship

When you trust that God is good, obedience stops feeling like obligation—and starts feeling like alignment with a loving Father.

As shared in the message, we don’t follow God’s ways to earn His love—we follow because we’ve already received it.

The Danger of Adding to God’s Word

Throughout history, people have taken God’s simple guidance and added layers of complexity—turning relationship into religion.

Even in ancient Jewish tradition, hundreds of additional rules were created around simple commands. The result? A shift from freedom to burden.

This still happens today when faith becomes about:

  • Performance instead of grace

  • Fear instead of trust

  • Rules instead of relationship

But God’s original design was never about restriction—it was about connection.

A New Perspective: Permission, Not Limitation

What if the Bible isn’t a list of things you can’t do—but a guide to what you can?

Think of it like a “permission slip” from God:

  • Permission to live freely

  • Permission to love boldly

  • Permission to trust deeply

God isn’t trying to keep something from you—He’s trying to give something to you.

Living This Out in Yountville and Napa Valley

Here in Yountville and across Napa Valley, we’re surrounded by beauty, opportunity, and community. But even in a place like this, it’s easy to chase fulfillment in things that don’t last.

God invites us into something deeper:

  • A life rooted in purpose

  • A faith grounded in trust

  • A community centered on love

At Yountville Community Church, we believe God’s goodness transforms how we live—not just on Sundays, but every day.

So… How Do You See God?

Take a moment to reflect:

  • Do you see God as restrictive or generous?

  • Distant or present?

  • Critical or compassionate?

Because how you answer those questions will shape everything else.

If God is good—and Scripture shows He is—then He can be trusted.

And if He can be trusted, then following Him isn’t losing freedom… it’s finding it.
