The Test of Trust: Putting God First Through Generosity
What does biblical generosity really mean? Discover how putting God first with our resources shapes our hearts, strengthens our faith, and impacts our community in this message from Yountville Community Church.
One of the most misunderstood topics in church life is generosity. For many people, conversations about giving can feel uncomfortable or even suspicious. Yet throughout Scripture, Jesus consistently taught about money, possessions, and stewardship because these subjects reveal something deeper than our bank accounts—they reveal our hearts.
In this message at Yountville Community Church, we explored a powerful biblical truth: God is not after our money. He is after our hearts.
Why Does God Care About Generosity?
When people hear a sermon about giving, they often assume the church wants something from them. But the message of Scripture points in a different direction. God desires something for us rather than something from us.
The Bible repeatedly teaches that our resources and our hearts are closely connected. What we value, we invest in. What we treasure, we prioritize. That is why Jesus spoke so often about money—not because wealth is the ultimate goal, but because our relationship with money reveals our relationship with God.
Generosity becomes a spiritual exercise in trust. It helps us answer a foundational question:
Who comes first in our lives?
God Cannot Be Second
One of the central ideas from this message is that God cannot bless an area of our lives where He is not first.
Throughout Scripture, God calls His people to place Him above every competing priority. This principle applies to our relationships, our decisions, our time, and our finances.
Proverbs 3 teaches believers to honor the Lord with their wealth and with the firstfruits of what they receive. The emphasis is not merely on giving something—it is about giving God the first and best rather than the leftovers.
This principle reminds us that God’s economy often works differently than the world’s economy.
The Purpose of the Tithe
The biblical concept of the tithe simply means “a tenth.” It was designed as a practical way for God’s people to acknowledge His provision and place Him first.
While discussions about percentages can sometimes dominate the conversation, the deeper issue is trust.
The tithe serves as a test of the heart. Every time we receive income, we face a choice: Will we trust ourselves completely, or will we trust God with what He has entrusted to us?
The book of Malachi contains one of the most remarkable invitations in Scripture. God invites His people to test Him in the area of generosity and see whether He will remain faithful to His promises.
This is not a formula for getting rich. Rather, it is an invitation to experience God’s provision, guidance, and blessing in every area of life.
Blessing Is Bigger Than Money
When many people hear the word “blessing,” they immediately think about financial gain. But biblical blessing is much broader.
God’s blessing can show up in countless ways:
Greater peace during difficult seasons
Wisdom for important decisions
Stronger relationships
Spiritual growth
Opportunities to serve others
A deeper sense of purpose
The message emphasized that God’s blessing is not limited to dollars and cents. Instead, God works throughout every part of our lives.
The question becomes: Do we believe that 90% with God’s blessing is better than 100% without it?
The Example of Cain and Abel
One of the earliest stories in Scripture reveals the importance of putting God first.
Both Cain and Abel brought offerings to God. Yet God accepted Abel’s offering and rejected Cain’s.
Why?
The difference was not simply the gift itself. Abel brought his first and best. Cain brought what he wanted, when he wanted.
The issue was not the amount. It was the order.
God desires first place in our lives because He knows that placing Him first ultimately leads to our good.
Generosity Fuels Kingdom Impact
Generosity is deeply personal, but it is also deeply communal.
When believers give faithfully, ministry becomes possible. Children learn about Jesus. Communities are served. New ministries launch. Mission efforts expand. People hear the gospel.
Here in Yountville and throughout Napa Valley, generosity allows Yountville Community Church to continue serving families, reaching new people, investing in future generations, and pursuing the vision God has placed before us.
The message highlighted a simple but powerful truth:
The kingdom of God often moves at the speed of our willingness to participate.
Every person contributes differently. Some bring more. Some bring less. But when God’s people come together, what is offered collectively becomes enough for God to accomplish His purposes.
God Gave First
Perhaps the most important reminder from this message is that generosity begins with God.
Before God ever asked us to give, He gave.
He gave His Son.
The gospel is the ultimate act of generosity. Jesus willingly came, lived among us, died for our sins, and rose again so that we could experience forgiveness and new life.
Christian generosity is not rooted in obligation. It is rooted in gratitude.
We give because God first gave to us.
As followers of Jesus, we are invited to align our hearts with His heart and participate in the story He is writing in our lives, our church, and our community.
