“It Is Finished”: What Jesus Completed—and What Still Remains for Us
Discover the powerful meaning behind Jesus’ words “It is finished” and how His completed work on the cross calls us to address our own unfinished business. A message from Yountville Community Church.
The Power of Three Words: “It Is Finished”
On the cross, in one of His final moments, Jesus declared a phrase that echoes through history: “It is finished.”
This wasn’t a cry of defeat—it was a declaration of victory.
During Holy Week, as we reflect on Jesus’ journey to the cross, we’re invited to slow down and consider what those words truly mean. In the original language, Jesus used the word tetelestai—a term commonly used in His day to indicate that something had been fully completed, a debt fully paid, or a task fully accomplished.
Imagine receiving a bill stamped “Paid in Full.” That’s the weight of what Jesus accomplished.
But here’s the deeper question:
If Jesus finished His work… what does that mean for ours?
What Jesus Finished on the Cross
When Jesus said, “It is finished,” He was declaring several powerful realities:
1. The Work Was Completed
Jesus fulfilled everything the Father had sent Him to do. Every prophecy, every act of obedience, every step toward redemption—it was complete.
2. The Debt Was Paid
Sin created a debt humanity could never repay. But through His sacrifice, Jesus paid it in full. There is no remaining balance.
3. The Perfect Sacrifice Was Offered
Like a priest declaring a spotless lamb worthy, Jesus became the perfect, final sacrifice for sin—once and for all.
For those of us living in Yountville and throughout Napa Valley, this truth is deeply personal. In a region known for beauty, excellence, and craftsmanship, we recognize the value of something completed well. And yet, no human work compares to what Christ finished on the cross.
The Tension: Finished Work, Unfinished Lives
Here’s where the message becomes deeply practical:
Jesus’ work is finished—but ours is not.
Scripture reminds us that God has plans for each of us—a future filled with hope (Jeremiah 29:11). That means as long as we have breath, we still have purpose.
Many of us carry “unfinished business” in our lives:
A relationship that needs healing
A step of faith we’ve been avoiding
A habit or struggle we’ve ignored
A calling we’ve delayed
It’s easy to look like everything is fine on the outside while something important is neglected on the inside.
The Danger of Ignoring What’s Unfinished
Unfinished things rarely stay small.
A small issue in a marriage can grow into distance.
A neglected spiritual life can become emptiness.
A postponed decision can become a missed opportunity.
Jesus challenges us not just to appear alive spiritually, but to truly live. He calls us to “wake up” and strengthen what remains.
In a fast-paced culture—even here in Napa Valley where life can feel both relaxed and busy—we can drift into autopilot. But God invites us into intentional living.
Identifying Your Unfinished Business
So what might your “unfinished business” be?
For some, it may be:
Community – Moving from attending church to truly belonging
Faith Practices – Engaging Scripture or prayer consistently
Serving – Using your gifts to bless others
Generosity – Trusting God with your resources
Relationships – Reconciling or restoring broken connections
Spiritual Renewal – Returning to a faith that once felt alive
The key is honesty. Only you—and God—know what needs attention.
How to Finish Strong
Jesus didn’t just finish His race—He showed us how to finish ours.
1. Make a Decision
Growth begins with a decision. Not someday. Not eventually. Today.
Indecision is still a decision—and often keeps us stuck.
2. Commit Fully
Commitment fuels endurance. When you decide to follow through, you gain the strength to push through challenges.
3. Focus on God, Not People
One of the biggest barriers to finishing well is worrying about what others think.
But what if, instead, we asked:
“What honors God?”
That shift changes everything.
A Life That Finishes Well
Every one of us is running a race.
One day, our lives will be remembered not for what we started—but for what we finished.
The invitation of Jesus is not just to believe in Him, but to live a life that reflects Him.
Because of what He finished, we have the opportunity to:
Live with purpose
Walk in freedom
Finish our race with faith
Take Your Next Step
If Jesus completed everything necessary for your salvation, then the question becomes:
What is He inviting you to complete next?
Don’t wait. Don’t delay. Don’t ignore it.
Start today.
